On a starry Friday night, the Tyler Junior College men’s soccer team met Paris Junior College for the third time this season and defeated the Dragons 3-0 to advance to the South District Tournament.
The Apaches came out aggressively and scored less than five minutes into the match. Sophomore midfielder Fernando Castellanos received a pass and kicked the ball past a diving Paris goalie to send the ball to the back of the net in the fourth minute.
The TJC women’s team sat on the sidelines with signs cheering for the men’s team coming out of halftime. Acting quickly, the men’s team added to its lead by working the ball down the field. From the far right side of the field, Castellanos kicked a shot that curved into the net for his second goal of the game to give the Apaches a 2-0 lead.
The Apaches kept the Paris goalie busy with him diving left and right all over the goal, blocking each one. However, a final goal would get past him in the 84th minute for TJC’s last goal of the game.
Diego Martinez got the ball in front of the net and tricked the goalie, who dived to the right side of the net while Martinez kicked in into the left side. The Apaches celebrated and held on defense to close out Paris and take the win.
TJC (15-2) advances to the South District Tournament, which will take place Nov. 8-9. The Lady Apaches travel to Corsicana on Sunday to play at 1:30 p.m. for a spot in the district tournament.
