Area golfers took on one of East Texas’ treasures on Monday, playing The Tempest Golf Club in Gladewater.

The young linksters played in the East Medalist and Prep Summer Area Championships. The medalists played 18 holes (par 72) with the preps playing nine (par 36).

In the Boys 15-18 Division (6,748 yards) of the Medalist tourney, it was a tight competition with two Tylerites carding a 4-over 76 to tie after regulation. Gregory Goates earned the title in a playoff over Reed Gesse.

Goates had four birdies on the day with Gesse carding two. Two other golfers were in the 70s with Ethan Dean of Kaufman placing third at 5-over 77 and Longview’s Denver Brown taking fourth with a 7-over 79. Just nine strokes separated postions 1 through 10.

There was another tie in the Boys 13-14 (6,051 yards) after regulation as Flint’s Braden Bergman and Tyler’s Will Gillen each had 8-over 80s. Bergman took the playoff to win the gold with Gillen taking the silver. Bergman had two birdies with Gillen making one.

Connor Carver, of Tyler, won the Boys 11-12 Division (5,239 yards) with an 82, one stroke over Lucas Latimer of Lufkin. Both golfers had two birdies.

Latimer birdied the par 3 No. 17 to tie Carver, but bogeyed the par 4 No. 18 as Carver had a par.

In the Girls 15-18 (6,051 yards), Grapeland’s Cheney Boyd won by one stroke over Sulphur Springs’ Mariam Tran. Boyd carded an 85 with Tran at 86.

Bullard’s Adyson Pipkin won the Girls 13-14 Division (5,239 yards) with a score of 100. Kyambria Acy of Tyler was second.

In the Girls 11-12 (4,512 yards), it went down to the final holes with Tyler’s Rosalie Halle edging Rusk’s Katelyn Henslee, 97-100.

Winners in the Boys Prep Tournament include: Nacogdoches’ Samuel Smothers (11-12) and Diboll’s Logan Houl (9-10).

Smothers carded a 43 to win by four strokes over Diboll’s Hunter Houl.

Logan Houl carded a 38 to edge Jaxon Hicks of Longview (39), Stephen Harris of Gladewater (40) and Davis Green of Tyler (40).

Taking first in the Girls Prep Tournament were: Elizabeth Harris of Gladewater (7-8), Zoe Cole of Hallsville (9-10) and Emily Machin of Tyler (11-12).

Cole (51) won by two strokes over Whitehouse’s Julia Hammond (53). Machin (46) also won by two strokes. Kenzie McClenny of Lindale was second at 48.
