The 72nd Annual East Texas Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament gets under way today at the Herrington Patriot Center on the campus of UT Tyler, 3900 University Boulevard.
The tournament continues on Friday and concludes on Saturday. Bouts are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. each night. Gates will open at 6 p.m.
Boxers need to arrive at 5:30 p.m. for pre-bout medical evaluations.
General admission tickets are $10, while ringside are $25. There will be tables (seven seats) available for $250 per night.
Tickets will be sold at the entrance.
The bout schedule thus far is 21 on Thursday, 23 on Friday and 26 on Saturday.
The winners of Saturday’s bouts advance to the State Golden Gloves, Feb. 29-March 3 in Fort Worth.
Craig Jones, secretary/treasurer of the East Texas Golden Gloves Association said the ages range from 8 to 34 years-old. There will also be a female bout each night.
He added, the first E.A. “Lucky” Vascocu Overall Tournament Champion will be awarded.
Mr. Vascocu was an East Texas fighting guru who developed the Golden Gloves in East Texas, Jones said. Each team will have a vote and the boxer of the tournament will receive the award. Also, the top team will receive a banner.
Mr. Vascocu’s family, including grandson Shawn Vascocu of the Troup Boxing Gym, will be on hand to present the honor.
Jones said 17 gyms will be represented with 16 teams. KO Boxing of Lufkin is joining with Lumberjack Boxing to form one team.
