Tyler's Annaka Watts and Chandler's Sidney Robertson maintained their leads and Troup's Jake Smelser surged to the front as the three area players captured titles in the 13th Annual Azalea Trail Junior Golf Classic on Sunday at Hollytree Country Club.

Watts, a junior at Tyler Lee High School, carded a final round of 81 to go along with her first-round score of 85 for a 36-hole total of 166 to win both the 13-18 and 15-18 girls divisions of the All-American Tour event presented by the Northern Texas PGA. She also earns an exemption to the Bluebonnet Championship scheduled for May 4-5 at Brownwood Country Club in Brownwood. It is part of the Legends Junior Tour.

Watts won by 10 strokes in the 15-18 division over runner-up Amelia Stankiewicz of Keller (92-84—176). Tyler's Sydney McConnell (87-90) tied for third with Brecklyn Flanagan (94-83) of Murphy at 177.

Smelser, who hopes to help Troup High School to its 10th consecutive state golf tournament later this spring, rallied to top the Boys 15-18 and 13-18 divisions. Smelser, who carded rounds of 74-76, had two-round total of 150, one stroke ahead of Henry Kirkpatrick (77-74—151) of Irving.

Smelser receives exemptions into the Bluebonnet Championship (May 4-5 in Brownwood) and the Byron Nelson Junior Championship (June 4-6 at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas).

Tyler's Griffin Jones, who carded a final round of 1-under 71, tied for third place with first-round co-leader Pierce Johnson (73-80) of Dallas. Jones, who had a first round of 82, finished at 153 with Johnson. Scott Skrocki, of Tyler, was also a first-day leader and tied for eighth at 156 (73-83).

Jacob Cole, of Tyler, also had one of the better rounds of the day with an even-par 72.

I am a native Tylerite and I grew up reading the Tyler Morning Telegraph and The Tyler Courier-Times. My parents took both the morning and afternoon papers. I came to work here 35 years ago at the age of 23, right after college.
