It was payback time for Niagara County (N.Y.) Community College.

The Thunderwolves avenged an earlier to Northern Essex (Mass.) with a 9-5 victory on Tuesday in Game 13 of the NJCAA Division III College World Series.

The victory means Niagara will meet Joliet (Ill.) Junior College for the national championship tonight at Mike Carter Field. The game has a 7 p.m. start.

A win by Joliet means the Wolves will win the national title. However, a Thunderwolves win will require another game on Thursday in the double-elimination tournament.

The Thunderwolves amassed nine extra base hits to eliminate the Knights.

Niagara jumped on the board early with two runs in the top of the first. The Thunderwolves added a run in the third, two in the fourth and scored four runs in the sixth.

Dylan Baun led the way with three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Ernie Kirkwood drove in three runs and recorded two doubles.

NECC plated their runs in the fourth and sixth inning. Three runs came in the sixth on four hit batsmen and a two-RBI single by Domingo Cruz.

“Offensively we just clicked all the way through … we stroked the ball pretty well today,” Niagara coach Matt Clingersmith said. “Offense has got to be there (tomorrow). We’re starting to run a little thin on pitching.”

Niagara starting pitcher Marcus Cavarello worked 5 2-3 innings, allowing one hit and five runs to earn the win. Cam Hall tossed 3.1 scoreless innings to close out the game.
