Niagara, Joliet, Northern Essex win NJCAA openers

Dan Eliopulos had two hits and three RBIs and Trevor Vermillion tossed a shutout as No. 6 Joliet (Ill.) Junior College scored a 10-0 six-inning win over No. 7 Nassau (N.Y.) Community College on Saturday in the NJCAA Division III World Series at Mike Carter Field.

Luke Andrade also added two hits for the Wolves (34-29), while teammate Nick Gould had two RBIs.

Joliet advances to meet Tyler Junior College today at 4 p.m.

The game will pit the 2008 national champions (Joliet) against the 2007 national champions (Tyler).

The Lions (23-17) will face St. Cloud (Minn.) in an elimination game at 9 a.m. today.

Game 3

Niagara 6, Gloucester 0

Jon Corbi and Richard Kowalski combined to blank No. 1 ranked Gloucester County (N.J.) as Niagara County (N.Y.) scored a 6-0 upset in Game 3 of the NJCAA Division III World Series at Mike Carter Field.

Corbi pitched seven innings, while Kowalski finished out the final two frames.

The No. 5 Thunderwolves (35-20) advance in the winner’s bracket to meet No. 4 Northern Essex (Mass.) at 7 p.m. Sunday.

The Roadrunners (47-10) will meet Montgomery (Md.) College-Germantown in an elimination game at noon today.

TJ Giczkowski and Michael Orlowski each had two hits for the Thunderwolves, while Jake Meehan and Dylan Baun added a double apiece.

Thomas Kain had three hits for Gloucester and teammate Eric Barbieri had two hits.

Game 4

Northern Essex 9, Montgomery 1

Costa Tingas tossed a three-hitter, while Domingo Cruz and John Faia had two hits apiece as No. 4 Northern Essex (Mass.) defeated Montgomery (Md.) College-Germantown, 9-1, in the final game of Saturday’s first day of the NJCAA Division III World Series at Mike Carter Field.

The Knights advance to the winner’s bracket to meet Niagara (N.Y.) at 7 p.m. tonight.
