Brittany Matthews became the first UT Tyler player to record three hat tricks in a career - let alone one season - with three goals to lead the Patriots to a 4-1 victory over Belhaven on Thursday at Citizen’s 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.

UT Tyler completed the doubleheader sweep when the men’s team defeated Belhaven 1-0 in the nightcap.

In the women’s game, Kathleen Johnson put the Patriots (8-2) in front 17 minutes in before Matthews took over.

The senior from Whitehouse scored in the 29th and 35th minutes to give UT Tyler a 3-0 lead at halftime. She finished the scoring with a goal in the 58th minute to restore the three-goal advantage after Erica Rempel scored for Belhaven.

Matthews increased her career goals tally to 26, which ranks fifth all time. The hat trick was only the seventh ever for a UT Tyler player but third for Matthews this year.

Jessica L’Hoste and Kaelyn Steitz had assists for the Patriots.

Belhaven goalie Alexis McDonald made 14 saves to keep her side in it. Emily Hurley had two saves in goal for UT Tyler, one coming on a penalty kick.

In the men’s game, Leandro Cid Fernandez connected on a pass from Lucas Pereira in the 50th minute for the game’s only goal, improving UT Tyler’s record to 7-4.

John McGuffin required one save to earn the clean sheet in goal, with eight of Belhaven’s nine shots going off target.

The Patriots had eight shots, four of which were on target, drawing three saves from Josh Gates.

Both the UT Tyler women and men are home on Saturday against Louisiana College. The women kick off at 4 p.m. followed by the men at 6:30 p.m.
