MARSHALL - Cameron Haller began the night by being crowned homecoming king, and finished the evening with a big rushing performance as Marshall earned its first win of the season by cruising past Corsicana, 40-0, on Friday.
Haller carried 14 times for 150 yards and three touchdowns to help the Mavs improve to 1-3.
The Tigers had 16 possessions where they were forced to punt eight times and turned it over five times. Marshall outgained Corsicana 363-164 in total offense and came away with 16 first downs. The Mavs had 133 passing yards and 230 rushing yards. Quarterback Hunter Herrington went 10-of-16 for 130 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He found Corteze Hurd three times for 74 yards and one touchdown. Tahj Washington had three catches for 45 yards and one touchdown.
Corsicana had 48 passing yards and 116 rushing yards on the night, and came away with eight first downs. Sam Gilfillan went 3-of-9 for 47 yards and threw one interception. Kishawn Kelley finished 1-of-7 for one yard. John Woods had nine carries for 41 yards. Ja'Micha Polk rushed eight times for 36 yards.
One play after its defense forced and recovered a fumble, Marshall's offense scored its first touchdown of the night. Herrington found Hurd from 37 yards out for six. Jacob Suarez tacked on the extra point to give the Mavs a 7-0 at the 7:15-mark in the first quarter.
The Mavs' next touchdown came on another one-play drive when Haller went the distrance from 67 yards away to give his team a 14-0 lead with 5:40 left in the first quarter.
Greg Hood recovered a Corsicana fumble and four plays later, Herrington found Tahj Washington in the corner of the end zone for his second touchdown pass of the night to make it 20-0 with 1:30 remaining before halftime.
It appeared the Tigers had recovered the kickoff to open the second half before the refs overturned it and gave it back to the Mavericks. That first drive saw Haller jog it in from nine yards out to make it 26-0 with 9:20 left in the third quarter.
Haller made his last trip to the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter when he punched it in from one yard out, spreading Marshall's lead to 33-0.
If the nail wasn't already in the coffin it, it was after Carlos Veloz recovered a Corsicana fumble and went the distance from about 60 yards to the end zone, giving the game it's final score, 40-0.
The Mavs will return to action Friday when they play host to the Texas High Tigers in the District 16-5A opener while Corsicana will host Manor.
