This past week is one that John Sikes won’t soon forget.

The director of golf at Hollytree Country Club, Sikes won a major tournament within the Northern Texas PGA on Tuesday, and was announced as a major award-winner on Wednesday — Teacher of the Year.

Sikes captured the 2012 KBS Tour Shafts NTPGA Seniors’ Championship with a final score of 9-under-par 135 at Hurricane Creek Country Club in Anna. He shot the only back-to-back scores in the 60s (67-68) and pulled away for a five-shot win over Paul Norris of the Golden Bear Golf Center in Carrollton.

Sikes, who opened the final round with a one-stroke lead, made a birdie on the first hole of the day and added three more birdies for a 32 on the front nine. He carded three more birdies and three bogeys on the back for the 4-under 68 and his first Section Individual Major Championship win and a $900 check.

By placing in the top five, Sikes also earned a spot in the 24th Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship, presented by Mercedes-Benz USA, on Oct. 11-14. The prestigious tournament will be held at Creighton Farms in Aldie, Va., and River Creek Club in Leesburg, Va., about 40 miles west of Washington, D.C.

Sikes has been down this road before, having twice qualified for the PGA Professional National Championship in 2006 and 2011. Sikes, however, turned 50 years old in May and thus became eligible for the NTPGA Seniors’ Championship.
