MESQUITE — Over the past two years, Whitehouse quarterback Patrick Mahomes has thrown his share of touchdowns.
However, his biggest score so far has come on the ground.
In danger of a shocking opening-round exit, Mahomes ran for a 25-yard TD with 29 seconds left in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. The No. 3 Wildcats then prevailed in the extra period to escape upset-minded Arlington Seguin, 50-44, in a Class 4A Division II bi-district thriller Friday night at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.
Mahomes, a Texas Tech pledge, faced fourth-and-8 with time running out on the Wildcats' perfect season and faced pressure from the Cougars defense. The senior tucked the ball, ran around the left corner and darted toward the end zone — dragging defenders about four yards to tie the game at 44-44.
Whitehouse stopped Seguin on downs in overtime and got the ball back, needing only a field goal to win. The Wildcats used only three plays to move inside the Cougars' 10-yard line, and Dominique Hollie scored the game-winner to keep the Wildcats alive.
Whitehouse (11-0) advances to meet Sulphur Springs in the area round at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Forney's City Bank Stadium. Seguin, which rallied from deficits of 23 points in the first half and 14 in the second, completed its season at 6-5.
Mahomes had a monster game on the ground, carrying the ball 26 times for 211 yards and three touchdowns. He also completed 12 of 31 passes for 195 yards and two scores.
Seguin senior quarterback Kelton Moore was equally impressive, finishing with 43 carries for 211 yards and two touchdowns and completing 16 of 29 passes for 287 yards and a TD.
Whitehouse scored the game's first 23 points to take a 23-10 lead into the break, getting two touchdowns and another rushing from Mahomes.
Whitehouse's first TD capped a quick, three-play drive that spanned 54 yards. Mahomes connected with Jaylon Dews for a 14-yard TD and a 7-0 lead with 7:25 left. The Wildcats' second score followed a Seguin fumble (recovered by Kostin Wallace at the 4), which Mahomes accounted for with a 4-yard run.
After getting another touchdown and a safety to take a 23-point lead, Whitehouse gave up 10 unanswered points during the final five minutes of the half to carry a 13-point advantage into the break.
Mahomes finished the half 8 of 18 for 113 yards. Moore was 9 of 20 for 157 yards.
