LUFKIN - Kordell Rodgers threw for 418 yards and six touchdowns as Lufkin rolled to a 58-17 victory over College Park in the District 12-6A opener Friday night at Abe Martin Stadium.
Rodgers threw three of those touchdown passes in the first quarter as the Panthers jumped out the a 28-0 lead. The Lufkin senior quarterback had scoring passes of 12 yards to Breylon Garcia, 48 yards to Malik Jackson and 18 yards to Kahlil Brown in the opening frame.
It was Brown who actually opened the scoring with a 1-yard run with 5:32 left in the first quarter. Rodgers was 4 of 4 on that drive for 82 yards, including two catches for 62 yards by Jackson.
The Panthers scored all 28 points in 5:14 of game time.
Lufkin added to its total early in the second quarter. Four plays after Isaiah Phillips intercepted College Park’s Jordan Turnquest, Rodgers hit Jackson for a 50-yard touchdown strike.
Later in the second quarter, Rodgers connected with Javante Ellington for a 25-yard touchdown.
The Cavaliers got on the board with one second remaining in the half on a 4-yard run by Turnquest.
Rodgers and the rest of the Lufkin first team offense played just one series in the third quarter, and it ended with a 9-yard pass from Rodgers to Dhailon Phillips.
Rodgers finished 22 of 26 through the air. Jackson caught five passes for 168 yards and two scores, and Phillips hauled in seven receptions for 131 yards and a touchdown.
With eight seconds remaining in the third quarter, College Park got a 34-yard field goal from Carson Mohr to cut the score to 49-10.
Early in the fourth quarter, Turnquest used a 65-yard run to set up a 5-yard touchdown run. On the ensuing kickoff, Jackson returned it 92 yards to the end zone.
On College Park’s next drive, the snap went over the punter’s head on fourth down and into the back of the end zone for a safety.
Turnquest finished with 143 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. He also threw for 68 yards. Tucker Woody added 85 yards on 15 carries, and Chase Lane caught six passes for 29 yards.
Lufkin (4-1, 1-0) will play at The Woodlands next Friday. College Park (0-5, 0-1) will host Beaumont West Brook.
