BRYAN — John Tyler kicker Luis Duran led 13 players named to the Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association's Class 5A all-state football team, the organization announced Thursday.

Duran was a first-team selection for the Lions, who went 12-3 and reached the Class 5A Division I state semifinals.

John Tyler Quarterback Geovari McCollister was joined by defensive backs Bryston Gipson and Isaac Warren on the second team. Running back Jeremy Wilson and offensive tackle Kendall Holmes were voted to the third team.

The Lions had seven players earn honorable mention: offensive lineman Adrian Harris, all-purpose Nick Cain, defensive tackle Braylon Jones, defensive tackle Pierre Leonard, defensive end Jassavia Reese, linebacker Jaylon Reese and kick returner DeAndre Williams.

A couple players John Tyler saw plenty of were named offensive and defensive players of the year: Aledo quarterback Luke Bishop and Ennis defensive end James Lockhart. Aledo and Ennis were Class 5A Division I and Division II state champions, respectively, and gave the Lions two of their three losses.

Bishop threw for 2,700 yards with 33 touchdowns and only four interceptions. The senior added 1,034 yards rushing and 11 scores for the Division I state champs.

The 6-foot-3, 253-pound Lockhart, who signed with Texas A&M on Wednesday, had 142 tackles in leading Ennis to the Division II state title.

Ennis coach Jack Alvarez, whose team edged JT for the District 16-5A title en route to the state crown, was named Coach of the Year.

Duran shared the first-team kicker honors with Saginaw Boswell's Alex Del Valle. Duran hit on 9 of 13 field goals and 73 of 82 PATs with 43 touchbacks. His long was from 50 yards and he hit a last-second game winner against Lufkin. Duran signed to kick at Tyler Junior College on Wednesday.

East Texans on the first team included offensive linemen Broderick Washington of Longview, a Texas Tech signee, and Erik McCoy of Lufkin, a Texas A&M signee, as well as Lobos defensive back Jakoriyan Walker.

McCollister, a Texas A&M-Commerce signee, threw for 3,380 yards with 35 touchdowns and seven interceptions, adding 664 yards and nine scores on the ground.

The Lions secondary had three players on the all-state team, starting with Warren, a Northwestern State signee, and Gipson, a junior who had four defensive touchdowns. Williams, who will be a preferred walk-on at UT San Antonio, made honorable mention for his special teams abilities, with one kick returned for a touchdown.

Another East Texas defensive back, Whitehouse safety Justin Dunning, earned second-team honors a day after signing with Texas A&M.

Wilson racked up 1,776 yards rushing behind fellow third-team selection Holmes, Texas A&M Commerce signee. Wilson will be running at Henderson State next fall.

Other East Texans on the third team included Longview fullback Marquise Hunter, Sulphur Springs center Landon Watkins and Lufkin return man Keke Coutee.

The Reese brothers made it a family affair on honorable mention as they earned one last honor before going off to play at New Mexico State (Jassavia) and Tarleton State (Jaylon). Cain will take his receiving and running talents to Pierce College in Los Angeles.

Harris, Leonard and Jones are three of the four from JT's junior class to make the all-state team that will return to next year's squad.
