Robert E. Lee aims to stay unbeaten and on course in District 11-5A as the Lady Raiders (17-5, 1-0) travel west to battle North Mesquite. Tip-off for Lee and the Lady Stallions (5-16, 0-1) is set for 7 p.m. today at North Mesquite High School.

North Mesquite was on the wrong end of a 51-25 loss against Mesquite Horn in its league opener as the Stallions enter this contest on a seven-game skid.

Lee, meanwhile, rolled to a dominant 71

-34 victory over Longview. Junior Ciara Johnson poured in a team-high 25 points, but she was one six players on seven-person team sheet who scored eight points or more. The one who didn’t, Berjae Lewis, made up for it with 10 rebounds as REL outrebounded the Lady Lobos, 46-24.

Johnson and senior Bre Brooks continue to pace Lee offensively. The junior forward is averaging 24.2 points per game to go along with 7.9 rebounds per contest while senior point guard Brooks is scoring 20.8 ppg while averaging 8.5 assists.

North Mesquite’s leading scorers in the loss to Mesquite Horn were Sha’Asia Estelle and Ashlee Leeds as each finished with nine points.

Lady Lions Look To Get Back On Track

The John Tyler girls look to gain back what they lost on Tuesday: a share of first place in the District 14-4A girls’ basketball standings.

JT (14-7, 3-1 in 14-4A) plays host to district-leader Pine Tree (14-6, 4-0) at 7:30 p.m. today at the Lions Den, with the Lady Lions a win away from getting back a share of the lead.

JT suffered its first district setback in a 45-36 loss at Nacogdoches earlier in the week.

Pine Tree moved into sole possession of first place with a 48-46 win over Kilgore. The Lady Pirates were led by Abby Mitchell (15 points), Sky-Lynn Holmes (12 points) and Abbey Popelar (eight points).

Pine Tree tops the district in scoring defense, allowing only 38.5 points per game.

JT leads the district in scoring offense (53.0), even after a lackluster effort Tuesday. JT scored five points in the fourth period.

Tiaka Lee led JT with 14 points, and LaTifah Rainey added 12 for the Lady Lions.
