GARLAND —The weather was freezing, but it did not disrupt Robert E. Lee, which used first-half goals from Hailey Hurst and Kourtney Hitchcock to defeat Rowlett 2-0 Thursday in a District 11-6A girls game.

The victory moved the Lady Raiders to 5-3 (14 points) in 11-6A and kept REL firmly in fourth place in the league standings. Rowlett dropped to 6-2 (17 points).

“We needed three points and we’re connecting (positive) results now,” Lee coach Chris Woodard said. “Earlier in the year we were giving up a lot of goals, but (we’ve kind of turned it around).”

Hurst’s first goal was courtesy of a perfect ball played into the box by Adrianna Perez that allowed Hurst to place a header into the back of the net. Just before halftime, Priscilla Rincon got possession near the top of the box and located Hitchcock with a perfect pass. Hitchcock did the rest.

Lee goalkeeper Lauren Nichols made seven saves for the clean sheet.

REL is back in action Friday on the road against Lakeview Centennial. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Homer B. Johnson Stadium in Garland.
