GARLAND — Spring break is around the corner, but that did not seem to faze Robert E. Lee, which scored four goals in the first half and added three more in the second half in a convincing thrashing of North Garland Saturday at Williams Stadium.
The Lady Raiders (8-3. 23 points) all but clinched a playoff spot in District 11-6A with their win and still two games left to play. Lee will next face Rockwall as part of a Senior Night doubleheader Tuesday, March 17 at Red Raider Field.
"It was nice to have a lot of goals and get a lot of people involved and get another shutout," Lee coach Chris Woodard said of his team's performance. "It gives us momentum going into our final two district games and hopefully the playoffs."
REL sophomore Alex Nice scored two goals and added an assist while Kelli Kissinger, Jazmine Navarro and Priscilla Rincon and finished with a goal and an assist. Kourtney Hitchcock and Jamie Mills scored goals with Marlen Esparza notching two assists and Claire Carnes getting an assist in the win.
The Lady Raiders had three goalkeepers combine on the clean sheet with Lauren Nichols playing the first half before giving way to Madelyn Filla and Maya Thornton.
Raiders face North Garland on Saturday
The top two teams in District 11-6A face-off at 11:45 a.m. Saturday in Garland.
REL (9-1, 25 points) enters as the first-place team in the district, but North Garland (8-1, 24 points) has a game in hand thanks to the North Garland Raiders match this week postponed because of weather.
A win for either team moves them closer to a district championship. The teams drew in their first meeting with Lee winning the penalty shootout.
Lee is coming off conseutive wins this week vs. Garland and Lakeview.
