Whitehouse gamble pays off in 10-9 win over Waxahachie

WAXHACHIE — The Whitehouse LadyCats made a risky call, but it turned out to be the right one a 10-9 win Friday.

Whitehouse leads its Class 5A area-round, best-of-three series 1-0 with Game 2 scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Whitehouse Softball Field.

Leading 10-8 in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and two outs, Whitehouse pitcher Mahayla Mitchell intentionally walked Miranda Herron.

That made the score 10-9 and put the winning run on second base.

"She (Herron) had already hurt us once with a grand slam and we were not going to let her hurt us again," LadyCats assistant coach Jason Shuck said of the decision. "I told their coach afterward that was the first time I'd ever done that."

Mitchell struck out the next batter on a 1-2 change-up to end the game.

Parker Towns led the way for the Trojans in Game 2. The senior threw a complete game, allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk. He added a two-run double and three RBIs to his cause.
