GRAND SALINE — The Henderson Lady Lions are one step closer to a berth in the Class 3A state softball tournament after a narrow 2-1 win over the North Lamar Pantherettes in Game 1 of a best-of-three Region II championship series on Thursday night.

With the score knotted at 0-0 through 2 ½ innings, Henderson’s Jenifer Armstrong led off the bottom of the third with a single from the eight-hole and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by teammate Jenna Toon.

One out and one walk later, Natalie McQuiston came up with a two-run double to give the Lady Lions a lead they would not lose.

Tiarra Davis tossed six scoreless innings and held the Pantherettes to only two hits to secure the win in the circle.

Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight in Grand Saline. Game 3, if necessary, will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday at the same location.
