MOUNT VERNON — John Tyler heated up in the second period to get back on the winning track with a 68-29 win over Mount Vernon on Monday.

Sophomore guard Tameal Jones hit for a game-high 16 points to lead the Lady Lions, who were coming off a loss to Bishop Gorman in their previous outing.

JT outscored Mount Vernon 25-6 in the second period, and 56-13 total over the final 32 minutes.

“Our girls did a good job playing defense in halfcourt and fullcourt,” JT coach Mike Smith said. “They started rebounding and things started clicking.”

Tiaka Lee netted 12 points and Quaneshia Johnson scored 11 points apiece. Nine players joined the scoring act for JT (2-1), which takes on Robert E. Lee today at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

“They did a real good job,” Smith said. “We need that again (Tuesday).”
