The Mount Pleasant Tigers defeated John Tyler 5-2 in the Class 5A bi-district boys soccer playoffs Friday night at Pine Tree's Pirate Stadium. Five different players scored for the Tigers.

Leading the Tigers offensively, Reyes Vargas scored the opening goal as well as assisting on another. Jose Molina also had one goal and one assist for Mount Pleasant.

The Lions finished the season with a record of 10-9-5.

The Tigers advance into the area round where they will face Mansfield Summit, which beat Dallas Samuell 4-1 on Friday.

The Tigers opened the first half quickly, scoring just over one minute into play.Vargas controlled a loose ball after a long volley and was able to dribble through the JT defense, finishing with a chip shot over the oncoming keeper to make it 1-0.

Despite John Tyler controlling possession through the early stages, Molina added another goal with 28:55 left in the first, scoring on a low corner shot to his right.Vargas assisted on the goal.

Gabriel Moyao added a third first-half goal with 25:49 left, delivering a long pass that sailed over the keeper and into the goal.

John Tyler's Aaron Ibarra opened the second half with a goal, finishing a rebound off of a corner kick with 37:11 left.

With 14:14 left, Angel Flores added another goal for Mount Pleasant, scoring off of an assist from Molina, who found Flores in front of the goal.

Brian Garcia scored for Mount Pleasant with 13:35 left in the game to give the Tigers a 5-1 lead.

Antonio Betancourt scored for John Tyler off of an assist from Ibarra with 4:24 left, however they Tigers were able to hold on for the win.

Mount Pleasant received outstanding defensive efforts from Luis Carreon, Osvaldo Ramirez and Fernando Garcia.

John Tyler had 16 total shots in the game including eight shots on target. The Lions had five corner kicks. Mount Pleasant had 12 total shots and finished with three corners.
