John Tyler likely headed to 6A

It looks like Robert E. Lee will have some old classmates to play with come 2016.

The University Interscholastic League released its classification cutoff numbers for 2016 to 2018 on Friday and it appears John Tyler, Longview and Lufkin will be moving up from Class 5A to join the Red Raiders in Class 6A.

This could mean old rivals REL, JT, Longview and Lufkin will be grouped together to form the "Beast of the East" district again. Those four may join Mesquite schools or the Rockwall schools in a league. Or Lufkin could go south toward the Conroe and Bryan school districts.

One never knows the workings of the UIL, as many coaches and school officials will attest to over the years.

"The last time JT and Lee were in the same district was 2009, so the game may have more on the line," TISD athletic director Greg Priest said. "It is a great rivalry and always a hard-fought game."

Nothing is official until Feb. 1 when the UIL releases its biennial reclassification and realignment for football and basketball as well as other sports.

The cutoff for Class 6A is 2,150 enrollments and above.

The unofficial enrollment numbers (freshman through senior) turned in to the UIL are: Lee (2,580), JT (2,270), Longview (2,200) and Lufkin (2,198). The only other East Texas school close to the 6A was Texas High at 1,914.

Other classification cutoffs include: 5A (1,100 to 2,149); 4A (480 to 1,099), 3A (221 to 479), 2A (105 to 220) and 1A/Six-Man (104.9 and below).

The numbers are also broken down into Division I and II for Class 4A and below. Those figures are: 4A Division I (723 to 1099); 4A Division II (480 to 722); 3A Division I (319 to 479); 3A Division II (221 to 318); 2A Division I (158 to 220; 2A Division II (105 to 157; 1A Division I (59 to 104.9); and 1A Division II (58 and below).

Other East Texas schools that could be moving up or down include:

Center (752 enrollment) to Class 4A Division I;

Pittsburg (699) to Class 4A Division II;

Grand Saline (320) to Class 3A Division I;

Harmony (304) to Class 3A Division II;

Daingerfield (291) to Class 3A Division II;

Harleton (239) to Class 3A Division II;

Beckville (223) to Class 3A Division II;

Linden-Kildare (212) to Class 2A Division I;

Grapeland (154) to Class 2A Division II.

Chapel Hill (1,082) and Kilgore (1,066) just missed moving up to Class 5A. The cutoff was 1,100.

Thus, probable 5A schools will be Texas High, Nacogdoches (1,674), Mount Pleasant (1,472), Hallsville (1,444), Whitehouse (1,409), Marshall (1,401), Longview Pine Tree (1,327), Jacksonville (1,249), Lindale (1,193) and Sulphur Springs (1,177.5).

I am a native Tylerite and I grew up reading the Tyler Morning Telegraph and The Tyler Courier-Times. My parents took both the morning and afternoon papers. I came to work here 35 years ago at the age of 23, right after college.
