ATHENS — Trinity Valley Community College almost opened up the 2013 season with an upset over No. 4 Iowa Western Community College in The Battle of the Valley Classic at Bruce Field on Saturday night.

Last year’s national championship football team from Iowa that normally uses the spread, went to the ground for the winning drive, starting at their own 22 yard line to score a 24-17 win.

However, the defensive front for IWCC stepped up and held the Cards out of the end zone with a pass knock down with 29 seconds left in the game.

The Cardinals tied the game at 17-17 with 6:58 to go when Green made his sixth catch of the game for a 22-yard TD pass from quarterback Ryan Polite. McClain tied the game at 17-17 with the PAT with less than seven minutes left in the game.

IWCC utilized the spread offense to take a 10-7 lead at the half.

Three first-half fumbles by TVCC thwarted two of the Cardinal drives deep in Reivers territory.

After the Reivers’ Danny  Hamilton booted a 39-yard field goal, Cardinal D’Nerrius Antione raced 86-yards with a punt return to take a 7-3 lead.

Garland’s Green highlighted the first half with three catches good for 36 yards. The Reivers held a 178-148 advantage in total yards at intermission.

Cardinal kicker Dylan McClain tied the game up at 10 with a 41-yard field goal. The score was set up by the second lost fumble by the Reivers in the third quarter at the Cardinal 49-yard line. Antione was on the recovery for the Cards.

IWCC’s Sehl made his second touchdown catch of the game with 3:56 left in the third quarter. Hamilton made the PAT and a 17-10, Reivers lead.

Three 15-yard penalties in the third quarter by TVCC aided the Reivers score, and called back a first down deep in IWCC territory.

Card quarterback, Polite was 27 of 49 for 307 passing yards.
