Horned Frogs' Boykin earns week 5 honor

Trevone Boykin

Texas Christian University's Trevone Boykin, a junior quarterback from Dallas, has been named the Week 5 winner of the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week, Cindy Smoak, vice president of SPORTyler announced on Tuesday.

Boykin, who graduated from West Mesquite High School, helped the Horned Frogs retain "The Iron Skillet" with a 56-0 victory over rival SMU on Saturday in Dallas. It was the most lopsided score in the series' 94-game history.

Boykin accounted for six touchdowns — running for two and passing for four. He completed 23 of 36 pass attempts for 280 yards. The TCU QB also rushed for 62 yards.

TCU entered the top 25 in this week's Associated Press and Amway USA Today Coaches polls. Boykin and the Horned Frogs will now host No. 3 Oklahoma in their first Big 12 Conference game this season on Saturday in Fort Worth. Kickoff is 2:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast by FOX.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, announced in 2012 by the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler, recognizes the top offensive player in Division 1 football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, tenacity, and community; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.

In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year D1 Texas college.

I am a native Tylerite and I grew up reading the Tyler Morning Telegraph and The Tyler Courier-Times. My parents took both the morning and afternoon papers. I came to work here 34 years ago at the age of 23, right after college.
