WILLS POINT — A second-quarter field goal by Trevor Merten proved to be the only points Wills Point needed Friday night in a 3-0 victory over Gladewater.

Wills Point paced the game with five different rushers to keep the clock running. Dalton King led the team with 54 yards on 17 carries for the Tigers.

Wills Points struggled offensively in the first quarter, running 13 plays and only gaining nine yards. But the Tigers defense reeled in an interception and forced Gladewater to punt twice in the quarter.

The Tigers’ offense, however, found their stride in the second quarter. They took over with 11:09 to play in the half at their own 15 and proceeded to keep possession for almost 10 minutes.

Wills Point moved the ball inside the red zone with back-to-back passes from Clay Deen to Ben Bean. King followed with an 11-yard run on second down to give Wills Point first-and-goal from the 11.

They drive stalled, however, after a fumbled hand off moved the Tigers back eight yards. Deen rushed for 10 yards on third down to move Wills Point back to the 4, and Merten finished off the 81-yard drive with a 22-yard field goal with just over a minute left in the half.

Despite the three interceptions, Deen passed for 81 yards on six completions, and 66 of those yards were to Bean. Deen also ran for six yards on seven carries.

Darion Gregory led Gladewater with 90 yards on the ground on 21 rushes. Charles Gordon added 48 yards on eight carries. The Bears quarterback, Derrick Daniels, completed four passes for 19 yards as well.

Gladewater and Wills Point exchanged the ball back-and-forth in the second half. Gladewater fumbled on its first possession of the second half, but intercepted a Deen pass on the Tigers’ ensuing possession.

The Bears had success moving the ball on their next possession, but stalled at the Tigers’ 30 and failed to convert on fourth down.
