Jaivon Williams hit for 27 points and Darry Moore added 24 as the John Tyler Lions defeated Mesquite Horn 81-77 on Tuesday in a District 11-6A basketball game at Boulter Middle School gym.

JT’s games are being played at Boulter due to construction on the John Tyler campus.

Also, the Lions head coach Cedeno Clark returned to the sideline after taking a medical leave during the holidays.

The Lions (10-11, 1-3) will face Tyler Lee on Friday at Tyler Junior College’s Wagstaff Gymnasium. The girls are scheduled to play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys at 7 p.m.

Horn falls to 15-6 and 2-2.

It was a back-and-forth game throughout with the teams tied at 43-43 at halftime. Williams gave JT the lead for good, 53-52, when he swished a 3-pointer with 3:40 on the clock in the third quarter.

Williams, who hit four 3-pointers, also gave JT its biggest lead, 78-67, on two free throws with 1:02 on the clock in the fourth quarter.

Horn pulled within 79-74 on a 3-pointer by Jaquarius Harris with 12.7 seconds showing. JT’s Zion Jenkins put the Lions back up 81-74 on two free throws. Jacoby Grant hit a 3-pointer with three seconds showing for the final score.

Brad Blaylock was also in double figures with 10 points with Michael Hogg Jr. adding nine points on three 3-pointers.

Harris led Horn with 20 points, while Julian Minuette and Cornell Caldwell hit for 14 and 10, respectively.
