CANTON — White Oak took advantage of three Edgewood miscues and defeated the Bulldogs 5-2 in Game 1 of their Class 2A Regional Quarterfinal series Friday night.

Roughnecks pitchers combined to allow only three hits in the opener. Things resume today with Game 2, scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Driller Park in Kilgore.

Edgewood threatened in the bottom of the first with a lead-off double by Davy Foster and walk by Justin Bundy, but failed to score. White Oak starting pitcher Josh Benson worked out of the jam with a ground out and back-to-back strikeouts.

The Roughnecks posted the first run in the top of the third. Lane Newton walked with two outs and Gabe Michael was brought in to courtesy run. Isaac Avery batted next and with Michael on the move doubled down the left-field line to make it 1-0.

White Oak added another run in the next frame on a sacrifice fly by Logan Frazer. Brett Foret, who singled to lead off the inning, scored on the play.

Edgewood knotted things up in the bottom of the inning. Jace Morgan singled with one out, the Bulldogs’ first hit since the first, to score Justin Thompson and Jacob Sharff.

The Bulldogs, however, struggled in the fifth inning and allowed three runs without allowing a hit. Hunter Owens reached base on an error to start the inning. Lane Newton then took first on catcher’s interference and Avery followed by being hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Owens scored the first run of the frame on a pass ball with Austin Ferguson, who struck out, at the plate. A walk to Foret loaded the bases and after a strikeout Jameson, looked poised to get out of the inning. But another error and a hit batter allowed two more runs to score for the Roughnecks to give them a 5-2 lead.

Benson earned the win for the Roughnecks. The southpaw allowed two runs, two hits, seven walks and four strikeouts in five innings of work. Herndon got the last six outs for White Oak to get the save.

“(Benson) did a great job of battling,” White Oak head coach Charles Forshee said. “He’s still young and learning that you’re not going to have all your pitching every time you come out. He’s learning more and more every time he goes out … he did a great job tonight.”

Jameson struck out 10 and allowed two earned runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings for Edgewood and took the loss.

Game 2 of the series is set for 2 p.m. today at Driller Park in Kilgore.
