WHITE OAK — Lane Newton recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift White Oak past Grand Saline, 5-4, in the opening game to a Class 2A best-of-three area baseball series Thursday night.
Newton's hit to right field scored teammate Devon Herndon from third base, sending the rest of the Roughnecks onto the field to celebrate the dramatic victory. The series shifts to Grand Saline for the second (2 p.m.) and third games Saturday.
White Oak (22-6) left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. The Roughnecks then turned a double play with bases loaded and one out in the top of the eighth against Grand Saline, which fell to 22-8 on the season.
Grand Saline raced ahead to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, thanks in large part to a solo home run by Garrett Hathcock. But the Indians lost the lead in the bottom of the inning when White Oak evened things at 3-3.
