WHITEHOUSE — Whitehouse and Lindale both opened Tuesday night’s tri-match with sweeps of Corsicana.
The rivals then squared off in a tightly contested battle. After Lindale grabbed the first two sets, Whitehouse won the third set and looked the be on the verge of forcing a fifth and decisive set.
Lindale’s Shelbi Steen came through with a match-clinching kill to give the Lady Eagles the victory over Whitehouse (25-20, 25-21, 16-25, 25-23).
The final kill was Steen’s 13th of the match.
Whitehouse jumped out to an 11-8 lead in the opening set. Lindale responded with a 7-1 run, Skylar Wyllie had two kills in that span for the Lady Eagles. Wyllie closed the set with a tip kill.
Lindale led 18-11 in the second set after two consecutive aces by Alondra Romero. Whitehouse went on a 3-0 run later in the set with blocks by Texas-Arlington pledge Briana Brown, cutting the score to 20-18.
With the score at 24-21, Steen assisted a kill by Jaci Philpot to give the Lady Eagles a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was all Whitehouse as Brown had five kills and Kate Idrogo had four kills. Brown finished the match with 18 kills.
Whitehouse used a 7-1 spurt to lead 19-12 in the fourth set, but Lindale rallied with a 6-1 stretch to make the score 23-20.
After a kill by Brown, Whitehouse tied the score at 23. A ball hit out of bounds followed by Steen’s kill gave Lindale the win.
Steen had seven digs and seven assists for Lindale. Wyllie had 12 kills, and London Reue had 10 kills. Kalaya Pierce had 15 assists.
In a 25-12, 25-16, 25-19 win over Corsicana, Steen had 12 kills.
Whitehouse swept Corsicana 25-14, 25-14, 25-19.
