SAN ANTONIO — King’s Academy’s first game at the TCAL Division II state tourna-ment couldn’t have gone much better.

Senior Mark Vardeman threw a no-hitter with nine strikeouts to lead the Royal Knights to a 10-0 win over San Antonio Sunnybrook Academy on Friday at Cornerstone Christian School.

King’s Academy (8-4) can claim the state championship with a win against Houston Central Christian Academy today at 10 a.m. If necessary, a third game could be required at 2 p.m. to decide the champion.

Vardeman allowed two base runners — a walk and a hit batter — that were both erased by catcher Brock Kenyon throwing them out on the base paths.

At the plate, sophomore Jacob Roach led the way with a triple for the Royal Knights while Vardeman, Kenyon and Seth Walker each doubled.

In addition to their exploits on the field on Friday, Vardeman, Roach and junior Ben Craig were honored by TCAL on the all-state team.

Vardeman was named first team as a pitcher/shortstop, Roach earned second team as a shortstop/pitcher and Craig booked his spot on honorable mention as a first baseman.

The all-state team combined TCAL Division I and Division II.
