LINDALE — The much anticipated opening of the renovated Eagle Stadium was everything LISD officials could have hoped for until the Van Vandals put a damper on the evening by shutting down the Lindale Eagles 34-7 on Friday.
The game was closely contested in the first quarter as both teams traded scores. Van struck first on a 22-yard pass from quarterback Jayton Moffatt to wide-out Javonta Thomas. After a 53-yard kick return by Airik Williams, Lindale quarterback Brayson Campbell hit Dylan Worrell in-stride for 18 yards to knot the score at 7-7.
Early in the second quarter, the Vandals’ Thomas broke loose for 65 yards to set up a Moffatt 2-yard touchdown run. The visiting Vandals would score again with 2:04 in the first half on a 36-yard pass from Moffatt to Marcus Orozco. The PAT failed putting the visitors up 20-7 at halftime.
Lindale started the second half with an impressive drive taking 5 minutes off the clock but the Eagles were denied as Vandal defender Reeve Hughes intercepted a pass deep in Van territory.
The Vandals would put the game away with a 10-play, 97-yard drive culminating with a 15-yard pass from Moffatt to Orozco. Moffatt would connect with Thomas again in the fourth quarter from 53 yards to finish the scoring at 34-7.
Moffatt ended the night 13 of 25 for 215 yards and three touchdowns to go with one interception. The Eagles were led by running back Jordan Jenkins who rushed for 43 tough yards on 18 carries and tight end Dylan Worrell snagged five passes for 57 yards and one touchdown.
Lindale (2-1) after a bye week, will travel to Marshall on Sept. 27. Van (2-1) hosts Pittsburg next week.
