Van downs Palestine

VAN - Van scored the final three touchdowns of the game, lifting the No. 9 Vandals to a 49-28 victory over the Palestine Wildcats on Friday in a non-district football game.

With the game tied 28-28, Van quarterback Garrett Moseley scored the go-ahead TD on a 14-yard run with 2:32 to go in the third quarter.

Ridge Preston then picked off a pass, setting up another Vandal touchdown, a 14-yard run by Marcos Orozco for a 42-28 advantage.

Moseley hit on 15 of 28 passing attempts for 292 yards and TD passes to Gus Brewer and Bray Doring. The senior quarterback rushed for 68 yards and a TD on six carries.

Others scoring TDs for Van were Davonta Johnson, two by Orozco and Tristan Gentry.

Brewer had seven catches 130 yards, while Doring gathered in five receptions for 119 yards.

Defensively, Jake Kellam led with nine tackles, along with three assists, a tackle for a loss and a sack. Jayden Jacobs had eight tackles, five assists, TFL, a sack and a caused a fumble. Orozco had seven tackles with JJ Kellum adding six stops.

Jeremiah Davis scored the Wildcats' first TD on a 44-yard dash. With seven seconds on the clock in the second quarter quarterback Tyler Gray found the end zone from two-yards out that tied the game at 14-14 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Gray hit Robert Gibson for a touchdown pass. Palestine's final score was on a 14-yard run with 3:19 on the clock in the third quarter. The TD tied the game at 28-28.

Palestine (2-2) opens District 9-4A Division I play on Friday, hosting the Kilgore Bulldogs.

Van (4-0) begins District 8-4A Division I play at Crandall on Friday.

Both games are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
