WINONA — After 45 years of failing to make the playoffs, the Union Grove Lions finally got over the hump by defeating the Winona Wildcats 34-6 spoiling Senior Night at Wildcat Stadium.
The Lions improve to 5-4 on the season and 3-2 in District 10-2A Division II play. UG was last in the playoffs in 1968, the final year of the Johnson Administration.
Union Grove was physical. They played tough, executed a lot better than Winona did, and were subsequently victorious.
The quarterbacking duo of Tristen Thompson and Garrett Gibson played lights out ball for the Lions.
Thompson completed 6 of 8 passes for 80 yards and rushed for another 108 yards. He constantly found ways to overcome the Wildcats' defense on third down with his legs and his arms to keep the chains moving.
Gibson had a remarkable game also. Gibson was responsible for all five touchdowns that the Lions scored. He ran in four scores and tossed a touchdown to Hunter Gray on third-and-4 at the 5, looking like Tim Tebow with a jump pass. Gibson finished his night with 107 yards on 16 carries.
UG led 19-0 at halftime and added another 15 points in the second half and gave up a score early in the third quarter as Winona drew to within 13 points, 19-6, and but could not get any closer.
Winona falls to 4-5 and 1-4.
