MESQUITE — Tyler Lee suffered its first loss of the season on Friday night, 19-14 to Mesquite Poteet at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.

In a defensive battle, Lee held a 7-6 lead at halftime.

Four-star running back Seth McGowan — an Oklahoma commit — had only 12 carries entering Friday night’s contest. He had 12 in the first half on Friday, but after a 19-yard run on his second attempt, the Red Raider defense was able to keep him bottled up for the majority of the first 24 minutes of action. The senior had 60 yards in the first half.

McGowan broke to the outside for a 33-yard touchdown run on his second carry of the third quarter to give the Pirates a 13-7 lead with 8:30 left in the third quarter.

After Mark Patton’s punt pinned Poteet at the 3-yard line, the Red Raiders forced the Pirates to punt and took over at the Poteet 30.

However, Lee was unable to capitalize as Poteet’s Jahmad Jackson came up with the interception. The Pirates turned the turnover into a 24-yard field goal by Matthew Sierra to make the score 16-7 with 2:02 left in the third quarter.

On the next possession, Patton booted a 51-yard punt down to the Poteet 1.

The Red Raiders were able to stop the Pirates on fourth down.

When Poteet got the ball next, McGowan fumbled in his own territory, and defensive lineman Garfield Lawrence picked the ball up and raced 38 yards to the end zone for a Lee touchdown, cutting the score to 16-14 with 8:13 to play.

Poteet then burned nearly seven minutes off of the clock with a 13-play drive. On fourth down, the Pirates elected to kick a field goal, and Sierra connected on the 31-yard attempt to push the score to 19-14 with 1:37 remaining.

Lee got the ball to its own 41 in the final minute, but three straight incomplete passes turned the ball back over to Poteet with 28 seconds left.

McGowan finished with 171 yards on 30 carries.

The Red Raiders were limited to 110 yards of offense and just 23 in the second half. Lee carried the ball 19 times for 72 yards in the first half, but was limited to six yards on the ground on nine carries in the final 24 minutes. The Red Raiders were 7 of 20 through the air for 32 yards.

Poteet got on the board first just fewer than four minutes into the game. On fourth and 21, Jaylond Police found 6-4 Houston commit Tristan Golightly for a 26-yard touchdown pass. Lee blocked the extra point to make the score 6-0.

Lee responded with a 13-play, 67-yard drive that ended with a 9-yard touchdown run by Jamarion Miller. Mason Magers’ kick gave the Red Raiders a 7-6 lead, which stood until the break.

Lee (3-1) will take on Rockwall-Heath on the road in the District 11-6A opener on Sept. 27.
