Tyler Lee went into Saturday night’s 64th edition of the Rose City Rivalry with the goal of pitching a shutout — something the Red Raiders haven’t done in the series since 2000 and a feat that hasn’t happened to the Lions since 2007.
A touchdown pass from Cameron Ford to Austin Campbell late in the third quarter prevented that from happening. But nonetheless, it was a dominant defensive performance for the Red Raiders that included dropping the opposing quarterbacks behind the line of scrimmage 13 times in a 34-7 rout of the Lions Saturday night on Earl Campbell Field at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.
The win was the 30th in the series for Lee and the second in the past three years. John Tyler leads the series 33-30-1.
Jamarion Miller, who rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries against John Tyler as a freshman, put the Red Raiders on the scoreboard quickly on Saturday. On the second play from scrimmage, Miller went up the middle and then cut past the defense to the right side and sprinted down the sideline for a 58-yard touchdown run to give Lee a 7-0 advantage just 23 seconds into the contest.
Later in the first quarter, John Tyler was lined up for a punt at the Lee 45, but a bad snap and illegal kick gave the Red Raiders the ball on the John Tyler 16. Five plays later, Mark Patton scored on a 1-yard run to put the score at 14-0.
The Lions had another high snap on the next punt attempt, and this time, the Red Raiders took over on the 13-yard line. Sophomore Bryson Donnell capitalized with his first career touchdown from five yards out to make the score 21-0 with 10:05 left in the second quarter.
John Tyler got into Lee territory down to the 21 late in the first half and set up for a 38-yard field goal attempt by Miguel Munoz. The Red Raiders blocked the kick and went into the locker room with a 21-0 advantage.
Neither team was able to get much going offensively throughout much of the third quarter. But a Lee fumble recovered by John Tyler’s Travion Ates set up Ford’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Campbell with 2:11 on the clock to cut the score to 21-7.
The Red Raiders added to their lead early in the fourth quarter with a 6-yard scoring run by Donnell. Lee tried to run for the 2-point conversion but was stopped to make the score 27-7.
With 6:57 left in the game, Lee punted the ball to the Lions, but the punt was muffed, and Lee’s Jeremiah Turner recovered the ball in the end zone for a Red Raider touchdown.
Lee’s defensive front put pressure on John Tyler’s quarterback duo of Isaiah Johnson and Ford all night. Seth Leon, Jamal Ligon, Josh Olivares, Jack Janis and TJ Hawkins were among the Red Raiders to record sacks.
The Red Raiders held the Lions to 30 yards on the ground. John Tyler had 129 yards passing, Johnson was 3 of 5 for 24 yards, and Ford was 6 of 18 for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Miller finished with 80 yards on nine carries, and he had five catches for 60 yards. Patton rushed for 17 yards, threw for 55 yards and had an 11-yard catch. The Red Raiders finished with 267 yards.
Lee (2-0) will host Nacogdoches on Sept. 14. John Tyler (0-2) will host defending Class 6A Division II state champion Longview Thursday in a game that will be televised on ESPN2. Kickoff for both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
