ROCKWALL — Tyler Lee head football coach Kurt Traylor said earlier in the week that he wanted to see consistency out of the quarterback position.
The Red Raiders appeared to find a successful formula in Friday night’s District 11-6A opener against Rockwall-Heath.
Trent Adams threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns, and Mark Patton had two rushing touchdowns, including the go-ahead run with 4:01 remaining to give Lee a 39-34 victory over the Hawks at Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium.
Lee entered Friday night’s contest with 260 total passing yards in the first four games of the season — 144 from Patton and 116 from Adams.
Adams nearly doubled his total in the first half on Friday as he was 10 of 20 for 228 yards in the first 24 minutes.
Both quarterbacks helped the Red Raiders get on the board in the first quarter. After Rockwall-Heath took a 7-0 lead with a 6-yard pass from Josh Hoover to Michael Harkey, a 39-yard pass from Adams to Jeremiah Turner helped set up a 1-yard touchdown run from Patton to cut the score to 7-6.
On the next possession, the Red Raiders ran a double reverse that ended with a 30-yard touchdown strike from Adams to Jamal Ligon to give Lee a 12-7 advantage.
Lee then recovered an onside kick but was unable to add to its lead.
Early in the second quarter, Lee’s Kedric Walker recovered a fumble to put the Red Raiders in Rockwall-Heath territory, but Lee was stopped on fourth down.
The Hawks (3-2, 0-1) went back in front with a 42-yard pass from Hoover to Jayden Jones with 8:34 on the clock. Just 14 seconds later, Adams threw a screen pass to Bryson Donnell, who sprinted down the sideline for a 79-yard touchdown. Ligon completed a pass to Patton for the two-point conversion to give Lee a 20-13 lead.
Rockwall-Heath tied the score with a 67-yard pass from Hoover to Jones with 4:42 to play in the half.
In the final minute of the half, Lee was in Rockwall-Heath territory when Peyton Williams came up with an interception with 14 seconds to play. Hoover connected with Corban Cleveland on a 9-yard scoring pass with two seconds on the clock to give the Hawks a 27-20 halftime lead.
A Jamarion Miller 7-yard touchdown run tied the score for the Red Raiders seven minutes into the second half.
They score remained at 27-27 until Preston Landis broke free for a 45-yard score with 9:38 left in the game to put the Hawks ahead, 34-37.
Less than a minute later, Adams found Turner for a 34-yard scoring strike, but the extra point was no good, making the score 34-33 with 8:53 to play.
After forcing a punt, Te’vion Massey returned the kick 41 yards to the Heath 23. The Red Raiders capitalized with a 2-yard run by Patton with 4:01 left. The two-point try was no good to make the score 39-34.
Rockwall-Heath got down to the Lee 4-yard line, but the Red Raider defense got the stop on fourth down with 1:21 to play. On third down from their own 7, the Red Raiders got the decisive first down with a 10-yard run by Patton.
Turner had six grabs for 135 yards and a touchdown for the Red Raiders.
Hoover was 14 of 28 through the air for 294 yards and four touchdowns.
Miller picked Hoover off in the first half.
The Red Raiders held the Hawks to just 44 yards through the air in the second half.
Jones finished with four grabs for 141 yards and two scores.
Lee (4-1, 1-0) will host North Mesquite (2-2), which was idle on Friday, on Oct. 4.
