Aaliyah Campbell (15) and Aaliyah Morgan (21) combined for 24 rebounds for the Tyler Lee Lady Raiders on Friday night. Morgan led the Lady Raiders with 16 points.

There is a tie atop the District 11-6A girls basketball standings after the Tyler Lee Lady Raiders defeated Mesquite Horn 50-36 on Friday night at REL Varsity Gymnasium.

“It keeps us in position to go get a district championship, and that was a big thing,” Lee head coach Ross Barber said. “Our kids were hungry. Now, we’ve got to regroup and start again.”

The loss was the first in 11-6A play for the Lady Jaguars, who had scored at least 70 points in two of their last three games.

Lee picked up its second win this week and 13 in its last 14 games after falling to Rockwall in its previous home game.

“The girls played with heart the whole night and executed the game plan to a T, both defensively and offensively,” Barber said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the way they played.”

Lee jumped out to a 7-0 lead with four different starters scoring to start the game. TCU commit and recent McDonald’s All-American nominee Aaliyah Morgan was the only Lady Raider not to score in the early going. While her teammates handled the first-half scoring, Morgan dominated the glass with seven rebounds.

Morgan scored 12 of her team-high 16 points in the third quarter, and she finished with 14 rebounds.

Horn’s first point came with 4:30 left in the first quarter on a free throw by Jasmine Shavers.

Shavers had all of the Lady Jaguars’ first-quarter points. She led Horn with 16 points and four steals, but her total came on 25 shots.

“The kid is a phenomenal basketball player,” Barber said. “You can’t stop her, but you can limit the amount of good shots she’s taking. “Coach (Emily) Breedlove’s game plan was great, and our kids executed it.”

Lee led 16-5 after the first quarter as Aaliyah Campbell scored in the finals seconds.

Horn had a big second quarter to cut the score to 25-21 at halftime.

Morgan was the only Lady Raider to make a field goal in the third quarter, and Alyssia Thorne hit a free throw to push the lead to 38-28 after three quarters.

Thorne finished with 10 points.

Tra’Liyah Washington had 12 points for Horn (13-13, 5-1).

Lee dominated the boards on Friday, outrebounding Horn 46-30. Campbell had 10 rebounds. Taliyah Mumphrey pulled down seven boards, and Thorne and Hayward had six rebounds each.

Lee (21-6, 5-1) will host Rockwall-Heath on Tuesday.
