PALESTINE - Weslee Ross hit Michael Zuniga with the game-winning touchdown pass on an untimed down to lift the Troup Tigers to a 19-17 win over Palestine Westwood at Panther Stadium Friday night in a non-district football game.
With two seconds left the Westwood Panthers were offsides and an untimed down was needed from the Panthers’ 26-yard line.
Ross then found Zuniga for the TD and the victory.
Ross hit on 17 of 40 pass attempts for 222 yards and two touchdowns. Desmond Deason also had a TD reception.
Westwood’s Jamar Clewis rushed for a pair of TDs and 125 yards, while Justin Ramirez added a field goal. Panthers’ Jesaiah Axum threw for 157 yards passing on 16 of 22 attempts.
Clewis scored on an 8-yard run with 11:36 on the clock in the fourth quarter to give Westwood a 17-13 lead.
Shane Thomas was also noted by the Troup coaching staff as Offensive Lineman of the Game.
Braxton Cassell led the Tigers on defense with seven tackles, including two for losses. He also caused a fumble and recovered a fumble. Also, Matt Adams and Bryce Attaway each had 10 tackles. Adams added a pass breakup.
Ramiro Martinez led the Tigers in rushing with 70 yards and a TD on 17 carries. Tristan Clark added 69 yards on 13 attempts.
Deason (77 yards), Dakota Wallace (50) and Jordan Green (38) all had four receptions. Zuniga had three catches for 37 yards.
The Tigers (3-1) open District 9-3A Division II play on Friday, traveling to Beckville. Palestine Westwood opens District 9-3A Division I action on Friday, playing at Elkhart.
Both games have 7:30 p.m. scheduled starts.
