Linden-Kildare Beats Troup 5-0 In 2A Region III Semifinal Opener

MARSHALL — Taylor Wells made sure she and her fellow Linden-Kildare senior teammates would not be late for Friday night s high school graduation.

It took L-K’s right-hander just over an hour-and-a-half to blank Troup 5-0 at Lady Mavs Stadium.

The win raised L-K’s record to 29-3 with Troup falling to 30-7.

Linden-Kildare can complete a 2A Region III Semifinal sweep today. Game 2?of the best-of-three series is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Lady Mavs Stadium. A Troup win would force a rubber game following today s first contest.

Wells, who also had the game’s key hit, mastered the young Troup lineup, striking out eight while walking one and hitting a batter.

The only clean hit was Caitlin Tomlin’s single up the middle in the sixth inning. Leadoff batter Brittany Mason had an infield hit to deep shortstop in the third.

Led by third baseman Baleigh West’s two putouts and four assists, the L-K (29-3) played flawless defense. On the other hand, Troup fielders committed five errors, leading to four unearned runs off freshman hurler Josee Ross.

Class 3A Region II Semifinals

Henderson 7, Celina 5

GRAND SALINE — For the second consecutive day, Henderson faced an early deficit against Celina in the Class 3A Region II softball semifinals, and once again the Lady Lions came back to serve a stinging defeat to the LadyCats.

Karley Free concluded her huge day at the plate with a bases-loaded, two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh to deliver a 7-5 Henderson victory in Friday's Game 2 at Grand Saline High School.

Free finished the game 4-for-4 with four RBIs and a double as Henderson (27-7) returned the favor to a Celina team that swept it in the 2011 regional semifinals en route to the 3A state championship.

Free's game-winning hit came after Henderson loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh and the score tied 5-5. A flyout and a fielder's choice putout at the plate put the pressure on Free to deliver with two outs, but the sophomore handled the at-bat with poise.

Free was 6-for-7 against Celina in the two games.

Once Free's go-ahead knock put Henderson three outs away from the 3A Region II championship round, junior pitcher Tiarra Davis took over. Davis struck out two Ladycats and induced a game-ending 5-3 groundout with a runner on. Davis pitched Game 2's final 6 2/3 innings, striking out seven and walking five while allowing two earned runs on four hits.
