Rains softball

WHITEHOUSE — Emory Rains and Hughes Springs were both at the state tournament a season ago — Rains in Class 4A and Hughes Springs in Class 3A.

With Rains dropping down in classification, the two squads were paired up in the regional semifinals.

After an 8-2 win on Thursday, Rains continued its march back to Austin with a 10-2 win over Hughes Springs on Friday in Whitehouse to sweep the series.

Presley McAree, Alexis Kearney and Jasmine Mott led Rains (29-1) with two hits apiece, and Kearney drove in three runs.

Chanlee Oakes allowed one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts and a walk.

Abbye McKinney had a triple, and Pearl Perry had a double for Hughes Springs (32-6-1).

Grace Pippin allowed five earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks in five innings.

Rains will play either Bells or Harmony in the regional finals.
