CROSBY — Shelby Smith struck out 18 batters as Houston Lutheran South took a 6-2 win over Bullard Brook Hill in the TAPPS Division II softball championship on Saturday morning.
Smith — the Seton Hall signee — allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with one walk.
Brook Hill was making its sixth trip to the state tournament in nine seasons under head coach Anthony Springer, but it was the team’s first trip to the title game in that span.
Lily Psencik scored on an error in the top of the first inning to give Houston Lutheran South a 1-0 lead, and Smith scored on a groundout to make the score 2-0.
With an out in the bottom of the second, Mckenna Lovelady reached on an error, and Sophia Arno came in to score the first run for the Lady Guard.
Houston Lutheran South scored three runs in the top of the fourth, which included a two-run double by Lauren Whitney.
Arno scored for the second time in the game in the bottom of the fourth by way of a wild pitch to cut the score to 5-2.
Houston Lutheran South added its final run in the top of the sixth with an RBI single by Jackie Lachney.
Down to their final three outs, the Lady Guard got a leadoff single from Arno in the bottom of the seventh. Smith then struck out three consecutive batters to end the game.
Arno went 3-for-3 for all of Brook Hill’s hits.
Kasey Anderson pitched all seven innings and allowed three earned runs on 13 hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Psencik had three hits for Houston Lutheran South, and Whitney added two doubles and two RBIs.
Brook Hill finished the season with a record of 18-8-2.
