LUFKIN - Freshman Frankie Sanchez set up senior Fredy Hernandez for two second-half goals as John Tyler took down Class 6A Conroe Oak Ridge 3-1 on Friday in the Lufkin Panther Showcase.

A day after drawing 6A The Woodlands, the Lions again showed they can compete against some of the biggest schools in the state against the War Eagles, who had beaten Jacksonville 4-1 on Thursday.

Jesus Murillo gave John Tyler (4-2-2) a first-half by pouncing on a loose ball in the box. It was the sophomore's first varsity goal.

After Oak Ridge pulled even in the second half, Sanchez twice played through balls for Hernandez to send JT to victory. Sanchez, who was called up to varsity for the first time Thursday, has three assists in two games.

Lions coach Brian Friend commended the play of Aquileo Estrada and Ivan Tinoco in defense.

John Tyler plays one more game in Lufkin against Port Arthur Memorial at 1 p.m. Saturday before playing its home opener against Chapel Hill on Tuesday at John Tyler High School Field.

 

Lady Raiders rally to beat Longview 3-1

LONGVIEW - Robert E. Lee rallied from a goal down to defeat Longview 3-1 Friday on Day 2 of the Chick-Fil-A Lady Lobos Classic at Lobo Stadium.

Lee got a goal and two assists from Jazmine Navarro as the Lady Raiders bounced back from a 2-2 draw on Thursday.

The Lady Raiders (4-2-1) trailed 1-0 before Jazmine Navarro got Lee's equalizer off a pass from Kaileigh Minehart.

Kelly Hitchcock put Lee in front to stay in the second half with Navarro doling out the first of two second-half helpers. Her second assist went to Alex Bice for an insurance goal a little later.

Lee closed out play on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Denton Ryan.

In the JV game, Lee's Maddie Bice scored as the Lady Raiders tied Longview, 1-1.

 

Price hat trick part of 9-goal rampage for Grace girls in win over Dallas Christian

Lexye Price scored a hat trick and had an assist as Grace Community rocked Dallas Christian 9-1 Tuesday at Clyde-Perkins Stadium.

The victory keeps Grace (12-1-1, 7-1) tied for first place in the TAPPS Division II District 2 standings.

Grace did all of its scoring in the first half to lead 9-0 at the break before coasting through the second half.

Sophie Claire Rook and Hannah Frazier each had a brace with single goals coming from Brittany Smith and Julia Bejcek.

Allie McCracken and Smith finished with three assists apiece with Frazier also getting an assist for the Lady Cougars, who face Bullard Brook Hill at home on Tuesday. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Clyde-Perkins Stadium.

 

Werner nets five goals for All Saints girls in 8-0 win over Brighter Horizons

All Saints forward Allie Werner was on target five times for the Lady Trojans Friday in an 8-0 win over Garland Brighter Horizons at Mewbourne Stadium.

Werner also finished with two assists for All Saints (6-2), which stays alone in second place in TAPPS D-II District 2. Werner now has 108 goals in her career.

Other goals were scored by Emma Lewis, Sam Morgan and Hope Sabella. Lewis also had four assists for All Saints.

The Lady Trojans next travel across town to face Bishop Gorman on Tuesday. The game is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m.
