On a cool, crisp night for football, the Brook Hill Guard and Grace Community Cougars put on a show for the packed Clyde-Perkins Stadium crowd.
Garrett Esposito threw two TD passes to Seth Moss, scored on a long run and teammate Jake Shaffer booted two field goals as the Guard scored a 33-28 victory over Grace Cougars on Friday night in a TAPPS District 2 Division II game.
The victory moves Brook Hill to 5-2 on the season and 1-1 in league play, while the Cougars fall to 5-3 and 1-1.
Brook Hill returns to play next Friday, hosting McKinney Christian. Grace has an open week and will return to action on Friday, Nov. 1, hosting Cedar Hill Trinity Christian.
Esposito was 17 of 30 for 293 yards and TD passes of 17 and 59 to the speedster Moss. The 6-6 QB also rushed for 58 yards on five carries with a 34-yard gallop into the end zone.
Moss hauled in nine catches for 185 yards and the two TDs. He had a 53-yard TD reception called back by holding.
Running back Lane Barter had 84 yards on 24 carries. Fisher Bass had an interception for the Guard.
Grace QB Price Williams hit on 17 of 30 for 159 yards and three TD pass of 6 (Emmanuel Milton), 42 (Peyton Walters) and 34 (Luke Smith).
Walters had 10 catches for 99 yards and the TD. Smith had four receptions for 49 yards and a score.
The Cougars were without Jeremiah Milton, who was on the sideline in street clothes and his No. 7 jersey. Alvin Skipworth, who had just returned from injury, had 37 yards and a 2-yard TD dash on 16 carries.
The Cougars recovered three fumbles -- Jacob Pena, Carson Fisher and Kaden Ramirez, who was the Reynolds Ford MVP of the game.
The Guard broke out to a 14-0 lead and looked for more before the Cougars took advantage of two fumble recoveries -- one each by Pena and Carson Fisher.
The first fumble was on a punt return after a high 40-yard kick by Alex Quintero. Pena pounced on the ball at the Brook Hill six.
On the next play, QB Price Williams tossed to Emmanuel Milton for a 6-yard TD pass. Hamilton Williams booted the PAT and the Cougars pulled within 14-7 of the Guard with 11:37 on the clock in the second quarter.
On the next possession, the Guard fumbled and Carson Fisher recovered at the 37 for the Coogs.
Nine players later, thanks in part to a fourth-down 10-yard pass from Price Williams Peyton Walters to the 16, the Coogs scored. Consecutive 7-yard runs by Skipworth, followed by a two-yard run by Skipworth the Cougars were in the end zone.
Hamilton Williams' PAT tied the game at 14-14 at 7:04 before halftime.
Brook Hill took two plays to get the lead back on a 59-yard TD pass from Esposito to Moss, their second big connection of the night. Shaffer's kick made it 21-14 in favor of the Guard with 5:51 on the clock in the second.
In the first quarter, Esposito hit Moss for a 17-yard TD pass. Shaffer's kick made it 7-0 with 7:21 on the clock.
Nico Flores scored on a 2-yard run at 2:21 of the first. Shaffer's kick made it 14-0.
In the second quarter, Esposito hooked up with Moss for a 53-yard TD toss, but it was negated by a hold.
In third quarter, BH scored 12 points, field goals of 21 and 25 by Shaffer and a 34-yard run by Esposito. The Guard tried for two after the TD but was denied by the Cougar defense.
Grace rallied in the fourth with TD tosses from Price Williams to Waltrs and Smith, the latter coming with 6:20 to go in the game.
However, the Guard defense stopped the attempted Grace comeback.
