BULLARD — Kendall Sanders, who did not start the game, made the biggest difference with 200 yards rushing and scoring runs of 10 and 99 yards as Athens rallied past Bullard, 42-21, Friday night at Panther Stadium.
Bullard (4-4, 0-2 in 17-3A) grabbed an early 14-0 lead before Sanders came off the bench in the second half to rescue the Hornets (5-2, 1-0).
Sanders scored on a 10-yard run with 3:30 left in the third quarter to pull Athens into a 21-21 tie. The Hornets then owned the fourth quarter, 21-0, highlighted by Sanders’ 99-yard touchdown run.
The other fourth-quarter TDs were Anthony Sanders’ 17-yard pass to Kaleb Hurst and Jawuan Martin’s 1-yard run.
Quarterback Colton Mebane threw three touchdown passes for Bullard, hitting Haden Bryant twice (33 and 21 yards) and Tanner Schmidt (35 yards) once.
Schmidt added 150 yards rushing on 27 carries. Bryant finished the game with five catches for 100 yards.
All three Bullard touchdowns were set up by Athens turnovers.
