LIBERTY CITY — The Troup Tigers came into Friday night’s game with Sabine with a share of the District 9-2A D-I title on the line.
Tigers running back Seth Gibson scored on the first drive on a 49-yard run to set the pace for a 42-16 runaway win on “Senior Night” for the Cardinals.
Gibson stepped off 131 yards on 13 carries to lead the Tigers..
Gabriel Leon tacked on his first of six PAT boots in the game made it 7-0 for Troup with 7:50 on the first quarter clock.
The ensuing Cardinals possession ended as Wesley Thompson recovered a Sabine fumble at the Cardinals 44.
Five plays later Marcus Davis waltzed in from 3 yards for a 14-0 lead.
The Cardinals again lost a fumble as the first quarter rolled down and Troup’s Michael Davis covered up the Cardinals miscue in Sabine territory.
Ladarius Morgan finished out the final 5 yards to make it 21-0 just as the second quarter started.
Sabine reached into its bag of tricks, answering right back with an 83-yard halfback pass from Tyler Muster to Jared Streeter. The PAT snap was too tough to handle, leaving the score at 21-6.
Sabine placekicker Austin Russell tacked on a 22-yard field goal with three-seconds left for the 28-9 score at the break.
The Tigers opened the second half with a scoring drive after receiving the second half kickoff. Quarterback Blake Lynch and Gibson continued to roll up the yardage before lineman Xavier Harris rumbled in from 14 yards away to up the count to 35-9.
The Tigers defense made a big play after giving ground when Thompson made his second fumble recovery at the Tigers 9, thwarting a hard-running effort from Qwaylen Chumley in the drive.
Chumley made up for the miscue with the final score of the game on a 2-yard plunge and the PAT kick for the 42-16 final score.
Chumley finished off the night with 156 yards in 24 carries for the Sabine junior, while making two catches for 45 yards to pace the Cardinals.
Lynch ran for 131 yards on 12 tries and scored once and was 4-for-6 throwing for 31 yards.
Sabine ended the year 3-7 and winless in league play.
Troup will advance to the playoffs with a co-district title, posting a 9-1 season ledger and 5-1 in league play, tied with Tatum and White Oak.
