GARLAND - Robert E. Lee’s Daniel Vergara scored his first varsity goal with 22 seconds remaining to lift the Red Raiders to a 3-2 victory over Garland Sachse on Saturday at Sachse HS.
The Red Raiders (4-3-1 0-1, 13 points) moved to within a point of Sachse for third place in the District 11-6A standings.
“Our district is tough from top to bottom, so you have to come play every day,” Lee coach Marty Germany said. “We needed a team effort (to get this win). Daniel came off the bench and when his chance came, he took care of it.”
Germany also praised the efforts of Gerardo Gomez in midfield and David McCook on defense.
Lee grabbed a 1-0 lead in the early minutes when a pass from Cole Wilkins found Alan Fernandez and he took advantage of a 15 mph wind behind him to unleash a 30-yard rocket that found the back of the net.
Sachse went down a man in closing minutes of the half because of a red card.
REL, though, went against the gusting wind in the second half.
The Mustangs and Red Raiders combined to score three goals in 1 minute to leave the game tied. After Sachse scored two quick ones, Isaac Olivares needed eight seconds from the kickoff to score off a pass from Edward Galaviz to tie things at 2-2.
The game stayed that way until REL won a free kick in the final minute from just outside the box. Olivares’ effort looked destined for the top left corner if not for the diving save from Sachse’s keeper. The Mustang keeper’s deflection, however, bounced off the post and back out in front of the goal with Vergara the first to it, launching himself for a diving header into an empty net.
The Red Raiders are at home on Tuesday against Rowlett at 7:15 p.m. at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.
In the JV game, Lee and Sachse tied, with the Red Raiders’ goal courtesy of Oscar Perdomo.
