Another year. Another trip to state for Troup and Quitman.
Wednesday, the powers will compete in the UIL Class 2A boys state golf tournament at Austin’s Roy Kizer Golf Course — an event they’ve combined to reach 12 of the last 14 years.
The two-round tournament concludes Thursday.
In the 2A Region III tournament earlier this month, Troup finished second and Quitman placed third behind champion Crockett. Troup shot a two-round 665 (336-329) to place ahead of Quitman, which finished with rounds of 351 and 354 (705) at Bullard’s Oak Hurst Golf Course.
Crockett fired rounds of 333 and 323 to claim the title by nine strokes (656).
In the medalist standings, Troup’s Jamey Scruggs placed second behind Jefferson’s Wilson Powell. Scruggs carded rounds of 77 and 72 (149), while Powell took top honors at 147 (76-71).
Scruggs’ teammates include Callen Eastman, Tanner Emory, Cody Johnson and Hunter Arnold.
“We’ve been fortunate to have kids that have committed to the program,” said Tigers coach John Eastman, whose program has reached state five consecutive seasons and seven of the last eight. “It’s really neat to see those kids playing six days a week during the summer. They will be at the golf course any time during the year. They have developed a tradition.”
Quitman, which has been to state five of the last six years, was led at regionals by Jeremy Bates’ 161 (83-78). The Bulldogs’ other team members include Blake Thurman, George Sinopoli, Clayton Rhodes and River Asmussen.
“We have dedicated golfers that hardly miss a day on the course,” Quitman coach James Warren said. “They know what it takes to get to this level. They try to find guys a little younger than themselves and try to instill the same thing. You always have to be working on your game and they have a lot of fun doing it.”
Nacogdoches Central Heights’ Jon David Pitts is competing as a medalist.
In the 2A girls division, meanwhile, Arp’s Gracie Greer and Edgewood’s Kaytlin Wyatt will be competing as medalists. Greer, a freshman, carded 76-84 (160) at regionals behind top medalist Jaylie Abernathy of Jefferson, which claimed the team title.
Wyatt finished at 171 (82-89).
The other Region III team qualifiers are Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill and Hughes Springs.
In 1A boys, Martins Mill is back at state in the boys and girls division and will play at Lions Municipal Golf Course.
The Martins Mill boys will compete for their second team title in three years. The Mustangs’ lineup includes July Latimer, J. Adam Burcham, Trey Saxon, Hagen Bennett and Ryan Tarrant.
The Lady Mustangs include Stormy Phillips, Cassidy McCoy, Autumn Osborne, Kimberley Easley and Adrianna Weatherford. Phillips is one of the top medalists in the field after claiming the 1A Region III title.
