CANTON — The Quitman boys, led by medalist Jordan Bates, and the Quitman girls, paced by runner-up medalist Molli Taylor, captured the District 18-2A Golf Tournament on Monday at Van Zandt Country Club.

In the boys tournament, Quitman combined for a score of 638. Mineola was second at 777, followed by Winnsboro (781).

Bates won medalist honors with a 145 (73-72) while Winnsboro’s Connor Whorff was second at 152 (77-75). Quitman’s Jake Gorman was third at 154 (73-81). Rounding out the top five were Grand Saline’s Lucas Akins (79-81—160) and Mineola’s Stephen Coop (82-82—164).

Joining Bates and Gorman on the Quitman team are Joel Cameron, Blake Thurman and George Sinopoli. Coop’s Yellow Jacket teammates are Garrett Griffith, Javier Lopez, Tommy Spencer and Kelby Hooks.

In the girls tournament, Quitman won with an 837, followed by Mineola (895) and Edgewood (962).

Lone Oak’s Kelsie Patton claimed medalist honors with a 172 (87-85). Taylor was second at 174 (81-93) while Annie Crenshaw of Mineola was third at 200 (98-102). Rounding out the top five were Quitman teammates Kaleigh Martin (109-107—216) and Abbi Taylor (114-109—223).

Others on the Quitman team are Emily Oppermann and Patience Barnes. Rounding out the Mineola team are Peyton Stephens, Jordon Dawson, KC Franks and Cheyenne Hays.

The first round of district was last week at Lake Fork Golf Club in Emory.

The Class 2A Region III Tournament is April 16-17 at Peach Tree Golf Club in Bullard. The girls will play the Peach Tree course while the boys will play the Oak Hurst course.

The Quitman and Mineola boys teams will represent the district, while Whorff and Akins will go as medalists by finishing in the top 10 and not being on the top two teams.

The Quitman and Mineola girls teams will also represent the district with Patton and Edgewood’s Kalee Lytle going as medalists.
