With a football playoff berth on the line Friday night against Pine Tree in Longview, the Lindale Eagles, sparked by the offensive line and running back Jordan Jenkins, stepped up.
With Jenkins scoring on the ground and through the air, the Eagles defeated the Pirates, 49-22, to clinch a postseason berth from District 9-5A Division I.
For his efforts, Jenkins, a junior, was named the UT Health East Texas Offensive Player of the Week for the 10th week of the high school football season.
He will be featured on a poster, sponsored by UT Health East Texas, in Friday’s The Zone special section of the Tyler Morning Telegraph.
Jenkins rushed for 221 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries. He scored on runs of 65, 48 and 3 yards. He also caught two passes for 90 yards, including an 11-yard TD pass from Sam Peterson for the Eagles’ first score. Before the touchdown reception Lindale trailed 13-0.
The Lindale running back has offers from Arkansas, Baylor, BYU and Louisiana-Monroe.
Jenkins follows Sabine senior running back BJ Stidham (Week 1), Big Sandy senior quarterback Caden Minter (Week 2), Bullard Brook Hill senior quarterback Garrett Esposito (Week 3), Chapel Hill quarterback Kobe Coker (Week 4), Grace Community running back Jeremiah Milton (Week 5), Whitehouse running back Peyton Kennedy (Week 6), Mineola running back Trevion Sneed (Week 7), All Saints running back Alex Sinclair (Week 8) and John Tyler running back Kitan Crawford (Week 9) in garnering the award.
On the season, Jenkins has rushed for 1,050 yards and scored 17 TDs on 182 carries. That’s an average of 5.8 per carry. Jenkins has also returned five kickoffs for 253 yards and two touchdowns. He leads the district in scoring with 126 points.
The Eagles are 6-3 on the season and 4-2 in District 7-5A Division I.
Fans can see Jenkins and the Birds in action on Friday when Lindale plays Jacksonville at the historic Tomato Bowl in Jacksonville. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
A win by the Eagles or a loss by Pine Tree at Marshall clinches third-place in the district for the Blue & White Eagles. If the playoffs started this week, Lindale would be playing Katy Paetow in the bi-district playoffs.
