MINEOLA — It was a doubleheader for District 12-3A basketball supremacy on Friday night.

The Edgewood girls opened the night with a 49-42 win over Mineola.

In the nightcap, Shaw Franklin made two free throws with five seconds left in overtime to lead Mineola to a 49-48 upset victory over No. 17 Edgewood.

GIRLS

Edgewood wasn’t going to let Sabria Dean beat it this time around.

The Lady Bulldogs avenged a 57-50 loss earlier in district.

Edgewood shadowed the Mineola star the entire contest and held her scoreless in the first half to take a 20-16 lead into the break.

Dean, who had 38 points in the first meeting, scored 12 points in the third quarter, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but the Lady Bulldogs still extended their lead to 38-28.

Mineola opened the fourth quarter on an 11-6 spurt.

A 3-pointer by Mineola’s Cyndi Butler cut the score to 46-42 with 32 seconds left. The Lady Jackets didn’t score the remainder of the contest and Edgewood converted three free throws to seal the victory.

Tabby Parker and Jacie Elliott led Edgewood (18-7, 7-1) with 13 points each. Kenzie Smith had 10 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks, and Keeley Randle dished out eight assists.

Dean finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and six steals for Mineola (21-8, 6-2). Jessiah Riley had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Tiara Stephens grabbed 11 boards.

BOYS

Down 48-47 in overtime with less than 10 seconds remaining, Mineola’s Ke’Davion George got the steal, and Franklin was fouled with five seconds left. He made both free throws to give Mineola the lead.

Edgewood had one final shot, but Jordan Davison’s 3-pointer was off the mark to keep Mineola undefeated in district play.

Mineola led 10-4 after the opening quarter, but the Bulldogs outscored the Yellowjackets 16-2 in the second quarter to take a 20-12 halftime lead.

Edgewood led 30-25 after three quarters.

A 3-pointer by Jonah Fischer gave Mineola its first lead since the second quarter, 37-36 with 4:02 remaining.

The teams traded leads and Edgewood was up 42-39 with 1:43 left.

A pullup jumper by Franklin cut it to 42-41, and then Davion Sneed tied the score at 42 with a free throw with 59 seconds left.

Edgewood tried to hold for the final shot, but Cooper Hill’s 3-pointer was no good to send the game to overtime.

Edgewood led 48-44 with 21 seconds left in overtime before Kelby Brunner’s 3-pointer cut the score to 48-47 with 14 seconds to play.

Franklin led Mineola (17-5, 6-0) with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sneed had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Brunner had 10 points.

Sean Joyce led Edgewood (21-2, 5-1) with 14 points. Hill had 12 points, and Brodie Prather added 11. Davison had 11 assists for the Bulldogs.
