EMORY — Whitehouse's Matthew Gooden ran for more than 100 yards, but Melissa quarterback Brendon Lewis threw for three touchdowns as the Cardinals defeated the Wildcats 36-14 on Friday in neutral site game at Rains High School's Wildcat Stadium.
Gooden rushed for 113 yards on 16 carries. He was playing for Peyton Kennedy who missed the game due to turf toe.
Lewis, a Colorado commit, hit on 11 of 18 pass attempts for 184 yards with TD passes to Ezar Monroe (4 yards, 80 yards) and Tyler Burton (27 yards).
Whitehouse (1-2) took the lead when Kaden Casey scored on a 1-yard run. He then ran in for the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
Melissa then scored 29 straight points before Cooper Clemons found the end zone for the Wildcats on a 5-yard pass from Casey in the fourth quarter.
Also scoring for the Cardinals (2-1) were Xylohn Posey (1-yard run) and Ja'Bray Young (4-yard run).
Casey connected on 12 of 21 passing attempts for 102 yards and an interception.
Carter Adams rushed for 41 yards on 13 carries for the Wildcats with Casey adding 36 yards on 11 attempts. Adams also have four receptions for 23 yards with Clemons catching four passes for 10 yards. Austin Barron caught two balls for 28 yards with Skyler Trevino grabbing one reception for 34.
Whitehouse has a bye next week and will host Mount Pleasant on Sept. 27. Melissa is scheduled to play at Cedar Hill Trinity Christian Sept. 20.
