Former DeSoto head coach and current SMU running backs coach Claude Mathis was named the new head coach and athletic director for the Marshall Mavericks, the school announced on Thursday.

Marshall ISD's Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Mathis to replace Clint Harper, who resigned in February to become athletic director at Duncanville.

In seven seasons at DeSoto, Mathis went 74-18, including a pair of trips to the state semifinals in 2012 and 2013. The Eagles went 10-2 in 2014 in Mathis' final season, falling to eventual champion Allen in the second round of the Class 6A Division I playoffs.

Harper left Marshall after going 27-20 in four years with his hometown school, making the playoffs every year. The Mavericks went 11-2 and were co-district champions in 2015.

Mathis was a two-time All-American running back at Southwest Texas State (now Texas State), leaving the Bobcats as the Southland Conference's all-time leading rusher. He once went for 310 yards against Stephen F. Austin in 1996.

Mathis has also been a head coach at Somerville and Austin LBJ.
